Create Options Before Deciding What To Do
Usually there are several possible ways of achieving project objectives. Before deciding on a basic course of action it is helpful for you and the project team to brainstorm options and then to assess the pros and cons of each. The techniques described in Getting The Best Out of People Working Together on teamwork may be used. It is very easy for a project team anxious to get on with the job to fall into the trap of ‘groupthink’ (also examined in detail in Getting The Best Out of People Working Together ) at the outset. On a number of occasions I have seen project teams undertake quite a lot of work and then realize that they are on the wrong track. Usually this occurs when the team makes an early decision to pursue an approach that seems to be attractive but for which the analysis is superficial. As with so many things in life, too short a period of time devoted to thinking often results in time wasted in the action phase. Reworking parts of the project or even starting again becomes commonplace.
