As you may have noticed, there are instances when Tony is as oblivious to his demons and desires as the rest of us. Bosses really need to be "more" self-aware rather than obsessively self-aware. Even with Dr. Melfi’s expert help, Tony sometimes back-slides and forgets to analyze his motivations for doing something or doesn’t recall the triggers that cause him to lose his temper and act in self-destructive ways. Therefore, don’t set unrealistic self-awareness goals for yourself. Realistically, you just want to increase your consciousness of why you do what you do. You want to insert mental alarms to remind you to look inward before taking a step outward. Expect to ignore these alarms at times or even not to hear them. In the heat of the moment, self-awareness is easily forgotten. However, just making a commitment to be more self-aware can make a big difference in how you lead. This commitment—which involves finding your own Dr. Melfi—will naturally cause you to be more reflective and self-analytical.
TONY’S SELF-AWARENESS AHA!
Get control of your demons before they get control of you.
